Lal Bagh Gardens | |
![]() | It is on record that the present day Lalbagh was a small fruit orchard during the times of Hyder Ali, where fruits such as mango, banana, pomegranate and fig were under cultivation. Later, Tipu Sultan expanded this garden by introducing exotic such as Cypress, Thuja, Junipers, Grapes, Guavas, Raspberries and Strawberries. Since he had diplomatic contacts with France, it was easy for him to get European flora. During his time, the garden was a royal resort and closed to the public. However, when Tipu lost Bangalore to the British in 1794, most of the exotic flora became totally extinct. |
The Lalbagh Glass House was commissioned during the tenure of John Cameron, who had felt the necessity of a large glassed enclosure for aclimitising and displaying the flora. With almost all the parts imported from England, the glass house was completed within just 12 hours of laying its foundation. A large number of plants were grown under this structure. In the subsequent years, the flower shows too started to be conducted in this glass house. | ![]() |
